The People behind the Discoveries
Meet Our Team
In the Todd lab, we do innovative science on important and challenging problems, enjoy doing science together, and are committed to bringing our best in a dynamic and supportive workspace. Our goal is for all lab members to success and go on to greater things in the future. Meet our team and alumni below:

Peter K. Todd, MD PhD
Sackett Endowed Professor of Neurology
Associate Chair for Research
Peter earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California, San Diego and then entered the Medical Science Training Program at the University of Wisconsin, where he completed his doctorate and medical degree. His Ph.D research focused on synaptic defects in Fragile X Syndrome, a common inherited cause of cognitive impairment in children. He completed a neurology residency at the University of Pennsylvania where he did research with Dr J. Paul Taylor. He came to Michigan in 2008 as an American Academy of Neurology clinical research fellow and trained in the laboratory of Henry L. Paulson, M.D., Ph.D while getting clinical training in movement disorders and neurogenetics. Dr. Todd Joined the Michigan faculty in 2010. When he is not in the lab, Dr Todd sees adult patients with Fragile X-associated disorders (Fragile X Syndrome, FXTAS, FXPOI) and Cerebellar Ataxia at the University of Michigan. He also sees patients with movement disorders at the Ann Arbor VA Medical Center. Peter spends his free time with his wife and daughters. He is an avid cyclist, craft cocktail maker and indie pop music enthusiast.

Evrim Yildirim, PhD
Postdoctoral Fellow
Evrim joined the lab in 2022 after a prior post-doc at Northwestern University and a Ph.D. at Rutgers University. He is using Drosophila to study repeat expansion disorders.

Nurun Nahar Borna, MD PhD

Borna joined the Todd lab in late 2023 after prior work on mitochondrial disorders. She is working on mouse models of FXTAS.

Richard Albertson, MD PhD
Postdoctoral Fellow
Richard joined the lab as an R25 fellow in 2024. he is studying how homeostatic compensation influences neurodegenerative disease onset and trajectory.

Samantha Grudzien

Ross joined the lab as a Biochemistry grad student and MSTP student in the spring of 2023. He is being co-mentored by Jay Brito Querido. His project is exploring using structural tools to understand how repeats modulate translational initiation.

Sydney Willey
Graduate Student
Sydney is a graduate student in Neuroscience who joined the lab in 2024. She is using stem cell model systems to study Cerebellar Ataxia with neuropathy and vestibular areflexia syndrome (CANVAS).

Amy Krans
Senior Lab Scientist
Amy has served as primary research support staff to the Todd Lab since 2010. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Grand Valley State University in Biomedical Science and then earned a Master of Science degree from Purdue University in Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology. Amy is a dedicated Red Wings fan!

Kinsey Van Deynze, PhD
Postdoctoral Fellow
Kinsey completed her PhD in computational medicine and bioinformatics in the Boyle Lab at Michigan. Her postdoctoral fellowship will explore both the normal functions and evolution of repeats and transposable elements to try and better understand how they cause human disease.

Erinn Laiman
Lab Scientist
A lab scientist with expertise in iPSC cell derivation and differentiation. She manages all our iPSC related work.

Ryo Iwase, MD, PhD
Postdoctoral Fellow
A neurologist and a physician scientist, Roy joined our lab as a post-doctoral fellow from Japan in 2025. His PhD focused on development of novel tools to manipulate repeat expansions therapeutically. His fellowship is focused on CANVAS, a recently described but enigmatic repeat expansion disorder that causes both neuropathy and cerebellar ataxia.

Tetsuya Asano, MD, PhD
Postdoctoral Fellow
Tetsuya is a neurologist and a physician scientist. His PhD work focused on mouse models of neurological disease. In the Todd lab, he is using FXTAS patient derived iPSCs to test out new therapeutic strategies in this currently untreatable condition.
