
Peter K. Todd MD PhD
Peter earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California, San Diego and then completed his doctorate and medical degree at the University of Wisconsin. His Ph.D research focused on synaptic defects in Fragile X Syndrome, a common inherited cause of cognitive impairment. He completed neurology residency at the University of Pennsylvania where he did research with Dr J. Paul Taylor before coming to Michigan as an American Academy of Neurology clinical research fellow in the laboratory of Henry L. Paulson, MD, PhD Dr. Todd Joined the Michigan faculty in 2010 and was promoted to full professor in 2021.
Since its inception, the Todd lab has studied the molecular mechanisms by which nucleotide repeat expansions cause neurological disease with a goal of developing novel therapeutics for degenerative ataxias and related conditions. As clinical director of the Center for RNA Biomedicine and the Nucleic Acid Therapeutics Initiative, he also leads Michigan’s efforts to bring novel RNA based therapies to our patients with ultra-rare disorders.
When he is not in the lab, Peter sees adult patients with Fragile X-associated disorders (Fragile X Syndrome, FXTAS, FXPOI) and Cerebellar Ataxia and participates in clinical research on these conditions at the University of Michigan. He also sees patients with movement disorders at the Ann Arbor VA Medical Center. Administratively, he serves as Vice Chair for Research for the department of neurology since 2021.
